Zvonareva tames the wind and Kanepi to reach first US Open semi-finals

New York, Sep 9(ANI): Russia”s Vera Zvonareva reached the last four of the US Open for the first time in her career with a hard-fought 6-3 7-5 win over Kaia Kanepi.

Zvonareva, who lost in the final at Wimbledon this year, had the game in control right through, ending the contest after one hour and 53 minutes.

“That was very difficult. I haven”t played in those conditions in a while and I hung in well and was able to be patient, but at the same time used my opportunities,” Sky Sports quoted Zvonareva, as saying.

Meanwhile, Kanepi admitted that wind had played a major part in the match.

“It was blowing in every way. When I played against Jelena (Jankovic) it was the same thing, so I was a little used to it,” she said.

Zvonareva will next face top seed Caroline Wozniacki, who beat Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets. (ANI)

Djokovic storms into U.S. Open semifinals with straight set win over Monfils

New York, Sep 9(ANI): Serbia’s Novak Djokovic has made it through to his fourth straight U.S. Open semifinal with a convincing 7-6 (2), 6-1, 6-2 victory over Frenchman Gael Monfils.

Monfils had been expected to put up a better challenge after impressively disposing of fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the last round.

Talking about the game, Djokovic said that he was happy to go through in straight sets in extremely windy conditions at Flushing Meadows.

“The first set was one of the turning points in the match. He (Monfils) had a break, but I managed to come back. I was really focused when I needed to be,” Sky Sports quoted Djokovic, as saying.

“I think these are the worst conditions of the tournament so far,” he added.

Djokovic will now face Roger Federer, who has beaten him each of the last three years – twice in the semis and once in the Open final (2007). (ANI)

New York, Sep 9(ANI): US Open top seed Caroline Wozniacki remains on track for her first Grand Slam title after booking her place in the semi-finals after defeating Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova.

Wozniacki, last year’s runner-up, dominated the quarterfinal to win 6-2 7-5 on an extremely windy night at Flushing Meadows.

“This felt like playing in a hurricane, but it was the same for both players and I’m so happy to get through,” Sky Sports quoted Wozniacki, as saying.

“When we were practicing I thought ‘Oh, it’s not that windy today’, but when we came out here I knew it was about just surviving, getting as many balls back in the court as possible and just run,” she added.

Wozniacki will now take on Russia’s Vera Zvonareva in the last four. (ANI)

Pak has ‘amazing’ talent to replace tainted trio: Vettori

Auckland, Sep 9(ANI): New Zealand captain Dan Vettori believes that even if Pakistan lose several players to lengthy bans over the ‘spot-fixing’ allegations, it would not take long for others to fill in the void.

“Pakistan are fortunate because they have so many talented players. Mohammad Amir wasn’t on anyone’s radar 12 months ago, but they have a habit of producing amazing cricketers,” The New Zealand Herald quoted Vettori, as saying.

“So, in terms of personnel I wouldn’t be surprised if Pakistan bounce back really quickly if they do lose a few guys,” he added.

Vettori further said that the allegations were disappointing, and would hit cricket’s image.

“Once you hear more allegations and more innuendo comes out, you worry if that is true as well,” Vettori said.

“Twelve months ago you’d have hoped nothing like this was happening. Now what’s the next thing coming along, that’s the scary thing,” he added. (ANI)

McCullum eyeing top order slot for New Zealand in Tests

Auckland, Sep 9(ANI): New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum wants to open for the Black caps in Tests after deciding to give up his gloves.

McCullum said that it could be the worst decision he has made in his career, but he also thinks that he would provide New Zealand with an aggressive opening option, The New Zealand Herald reports.

New Zealand has struggled for many years to find a settled and productive opening partnership, and McCullum, who has averaged 34.90 in 52 tests, is seen to offer the national selectors a new option.

McCullum will not be the first wicketkeeper who has also been a test opener. West Indian Clyde Walcott opened the innings in his first Test match against England in 1948.

Alec Stewart did so in tests for England, Wayne Phillips for Australia, Romesh Kaluwitharana for Sri Lanka, Andy Flower for Zimbabwe and Adam Parore, briefly, for New Zealand.

Adam Gilchrist for Australia, Kumar Sangakkara for Sri Lanka and Kamran Akmal for Pakistan have done so in the limited-overs format. (ANI)

Oz tour to India can provide healing touch to match fixing controversy: Lawson

Mumbai, Sept.9 (ANI): Former Australian fast bowler and ex-coach of the Pakistan cricket team Geoff Lawson has said Australia”s upcoming tour of India could provide the much needed healing touch to the match-fixing controversy engulfing world cricket, courtesy Pakistan”s cricketers.

“Cricket is a very resilient sport. What is needed urgently is a tough, hard series of Test cricket. And the game will move on,” Lawson told reporters in Mumbai late on Tuesday.

Lawson said Australia”s two Tests against the top-ranked Indians next month, followed by three one-day internationals, were crucial for the health of the game.

The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Lawson, as saying: “This India-Australia series is very important. People in Australia are looking forward to the Ashes. A good, tough and hard series before the Ashes will do a lot to retain people”s faith in the game.”

“If players play good cricket and the public see good cricket, they will forget what”s gone on before. The people want their heroes to play well. There wasn”t a hero in this controversy,” Lawson added.

Ricky Ponting”s Australia will arrive in India on September 21 and play two back-to-back Tests in Mohali (October 1-5) and Bangalore (Oct 9-13).

The Tests will be followed by one-day matches in Kochi (Oct 17), Visakhapatnam (Oct 20) and Goa (Oct 24).

Australia will then return home to prepare for the Ashes series against England starting in Brisbane on November 25. (ANI)

Shimla workshop for hospitality industry to cater to Commonwealth Games

Shimla, Sep 9 (ANI): Hospitality industry has organised a-three day special safety training workshop in Shimla to offer better service to the guests visiting the State during the Commonwealth Games.

Shimla Hoteliers Association in collaboration with Tourism Industry Stakeholder welfare Society and Himachal Pradesh Civil Defence have organized the workshop in order to train and make the hotel staff aware about the safety, security and hospitality service.

Participants believe that arrangements for safety of tourists especially if they are coming in large numbers is a very important aspect of the hospitality business.

“This kind of trainings really helps people to be focused on safety also when they think about the guests. So that way it is a very good training I would say for the staff, who are attending it,” said Pradeep Kartiken.

“I think it is very important, since we are hoteliers and we have guests keep coming in over here. So there can be any sort of an emergency like a guest can fall down, he can trip down or he can have a fracture or fire anything. So for that, it is very important that all our staff is trained into it,” said Joshika.

India is expecting about two million tourists in New Delhi for the Games, as well as about 10,000 athletes from 71 teams representing 54 Commonwealth member states.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games is India”s biggest sporting event since the 1982 Asian Games. (ANI)

Now, England’s T20 World Cup triumph comes under match fixing scanner

London, Sept.9 (ANI): England’s triumph in the World Twenty20 is sensationally the latest event to come under the match-fixing microscope.

Sun Sport has learned that the ICC is investigating the Pakistan squad that played in the event in the Caribbean in April and May.

England beat Pakistan by six wickets in the Super Eights stage on May 6 and went on to win a global trophy for the first time in more than 30 years of trying.

It is understood that two players have been asked for the details of the mobile phones they were using in the Caribbean and other information. Their responses so far are described as “unsatisfactory”.

England coach Andy Flower could barely conceal his fury on Thursday because of the way England”s ruthless displays in recent weeks have been “overshadowed”.

He also accused the ECB of damaging attendances by jam-packing the schedule with too many matches.

The Sun quoted Flower, as saying: “There”s a bit of a gloomy atmosphere and, with the sullying of cricket”s name and reputation, that”s understandable. It”s a pity because we are playing some outstanding cricket. We”ve won two games comfortably and for the skills of the bowlers to be completely overshadowed is sad.”

England has won seven T20 matches on the trot – a world record – but the milestone was met with indifference in Wales.

Flower added: “It was a strange atmosphere. To have two Twenty20 games in 48 hours at the same venue at this stage of the season might have been an error.” (ANI)
