New iPhone app could replace stethoscope

London, Aug 31 (ANI): The standard equipment found with doctors, stethoscope, may soon be history as millions of doctors across the world are signing up for a free iphone app that can monitor heartbeat.

Peter Bentley of the University College London has invented the iStethoscope application, which monitors heartbeat through sensors in the phone.

As many as 500 apps are being downloaded everyday since a free version was introduced last week.

“Everybody is very excited about the potential of the adoption of mobile phone technology into the medical workplace, and rightly so,” the Telegraph quoted Bentley as saying.

“Smartphones are incredibly powerful devices packed full of sensors, cameras, high-quality microphones with amazing displays,” he added. (ANI)

Tweens find Internet ”a source of happiness” (re-issue)

Sydney, Aug 30 (ANI): Tweens are a lot more adept at using Internet and find it a source of happiness, new research has shown.

The Tween Tracker survey showed that almost half of the 1200 children interviewed have Facebook profiles.

Social media expert Laurel Papworth describes Facebook as the online equivalent of a “keep out, I mean it!” sign on the bedroom door.

“Managing how they connect is a better option than saying ”don”t connect at all”,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted her as saying.

The study also revealed that Internet was a source of a lot of things apart from entertainment – environment, disease, poverty and terrorism were common concerns amongst Internet-savvy tweens.

“These kids seem less depressed. Perhaps rather than being preached at how bad the world is, they see more people changing it . . . a chorus of voices speaking out, rather than just the bad news in passive mode,” Papworth said.

Lola Spence, 7, and Sinead Leahy, 8, said they used it every day and spent up to two hours a day playing computer games and using social networking sites like Habbo.

Despite the high importance of socialising online, most tweens still prefer to read books and magazines than surf the web. (ANI)

New ‘self-dusting solar panels’ inspired by Mars mission

Washington, Aug 23 (ANI): Scientists have discovered a new technology of ‘self-dusting solar panels’ that could increase the efficiency of producing electricity from sunlight and reduce maintenance costs for large-scale solar installations.

The technology is the one that was developed for space missions to Mars.

“We think our self-cleaning panels used in areas of high dust and particulate pollutant concentrations will highly benefit the systems” solar energy output,” said study leader Malay K. Mazumder.

“To our knowledge, this is the only technology for automatic dust cleaning that doesn”t require water or mechanical movement,” he added.

In sun-drenched areas where dry weather and winds sweep dust into the air and deposit it onto the surface of solar panel, the grime reduces the amount of light that can enter the business part of the solar panel, decreasing the amount of electricity produced.

Clean water tends to be scarce in these areas, making it expensive to clean the solar panels.

“A dust layer of one-seventh of an ounce per square yard decreases solar power conversion by 40 percent,” explained Mazumder.

The new method involves deposition of a transparent, electrically sensitive material deposited on glass or a transparent plastic sheet covering the panels.

Sensors monitor dust levels, and when its concentration reaches a critical level, the material is energized, creating an electric charge that repels the dust wave.

“Less than 0.04 percent of global energy production is derived from solar panels, but if only four percent of the world”s deserts were dedicated to solar power harvesting, our energy needs could be completely met worldwide. This self-cleaning technology can play an important role,” concluded Mazumdar. (ANI)

New technology could boost light consumption, quality of life

Washington, Aug 20 (ANI): A new technology based on semiconductor light-emitting diodes (LEDs) could increase our consumption of light and therefore our quality of life.

The team of US-based researchers said that SSL – with its cheap manufacturing and operating costs – may have an impact not just on energy consumption but also on human productivity, and that the two impacts are linked.

“Thus, an increase in the cost of energy associated with lighting, which would normally reduce both human productivity and energy consumption, can be mitigated by an increase in the efficiency in lighting: energy consumption can be held constant while maintaining some human productivity increase or energy consumption can be reduced without a decrease in human productivity,” they said.

The study could have implications for governments and local authorities that are implementing legislated regulations in energy consumption or instigating incentive schemes to use more energy efficient light sources.

The research is published in a special issue of IOP Publishing”s Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics. (ANI)

Samsung i8520 Beam General Specifications, Samsung i8520 Features

Samsung i8520 Beam (Halo)is a mobile phones with unsightly projector add-ons or, at the very best, bulky projector housings that are seemingly slapped onto the top of the phone. The Samsung i8520 isn’t just an feature-filled Android phone, it isn’t just a projector phone, it isn’t just a smartphone with a crystal clear AMOLED display – it’s all of those things, rolled into one decently slick package.

Beam, the product’s official name, is a pico projector phone that is said to be running on Android 2.1 OS and an interface of TouchWiz 3.0. This phone is quite an impressive electronic product with its integrated pico projector (made by Texas Instrument)as its key feature. The TouchWiz capability of i8520 is akin yet slightly different from the features found in Bada, another innovative handheld phone from Samsung.

If you have been an avid fan of Samsung phones, you might notice that the i8520 seems familiar since a similar phone was already announced by the company last year but was eventually cancelled, the Samsung i7410.

This camera implementations makes the i8520 applicable for instant video capture and playback of its recorded video through the integrated projector. The format of audio files it can play are MP3, OGG, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, WMA, WAV, MID and AC3.
