Iconic German auto maker Volkswagen first launched the ‘Passat’, a large family car  in the year 1973. Since then it has gone through several generation changes. The current generation is the eighth generation and the model number is B8. ‘Passat’ has the distinction of being one of the most successful car models of all time and finds itself in the list of 10 top selling cars. The current generation of the ‘Passat’ that is on sale in Europe market is built on VW’s acclaimed MQB platform. However the German brand is ready to expand the model range and has introduced a new hybrid variant called the ‘VW Passat GTE’. The official public appearance will take place at the upcoming Paris Motor Show. Ahead of the release VW has revealed detailed information about the car. The model is called ‘Passat GTE’, the ‘GTE’ indicating the plug-in hybrid nature, as seen in ‘Golf GTE’. For the very first time VW is releasing a plug-in hybrid  in saloon (sedan) and estate body styles. The sale of the model will start from October of 2015. While the initial launch will be in the European market, a US spec version is also expected in future.

Exterior/ Interior

To set it apart from other variants VW has put in some visual changes to this new version. The upper front fascia now carries a new chrome grille with a blue line on top. The front bumper has also been redesigned and is now fitted with air inlet panels and daytime running lights (LED). Blue color and  ‘C’-shaped LED headlights have become a kind of signature VW styling for its  hybrid models and the new ‘Passat’ is no exception. It carries both the C-shaped lights and the color blue on the grille. To increase the style even more, VW has added the new plug-in hybrid with 17-inch ‘Astana’ style alloy wheels.

Like the outside, the inside too has been changed in some places. The makers have taken effort to match the interior with the drive system. There are standard features like- leather covered steering wheel with blue stitching , ambient lighting (blue), gear knob with stylish blue stitching etc. The ‘Sevilla’ cloth based seats are very comfortable to sit in. The seats have a blue basic structure that has been configured especially for this new ‘GTE’ model. To match the advanced powertrain, VW has fitted the new ‘Passat GTE’ with the advanced ‘Composition Media’ system. The system comes with a high resolution screen in 6.5-inch or 8 inch size. Some of the higher systems have radio-navigation in them. The other highlights include-  post collision automatic braking, Driver Alert, special rain sensors, Emergency Braking system, Led headlights and ParkPilot system.

Engine

The hybrid power system  of the new ‘Passat’ is based on a combination of a battery run electric motor and petrol consuming engine. Here the petrol engine is a 1.4 liter TSI unit that has been re-tuned.  While engine can create 156 HP power, the electric motor can create an output of 115 HP and 400 Nm torque. Thus the  total output becomes 218 HP. The powertrain is mated to a six speed dual-clutch auto transmission.

Volkswagen has claimed that the car will consume fuel on an average of 2 liter for every 100 km  or 141 miles with each gallon. The Co2 emission is also on the lower side with 45 g per km. With a full tank and full charge ,the car can travel up to 1000 km or 622 miles.  Under eight seconds it can accelerate from  0 to 62 mph( 100 km).  The top speed of the car is  220 km (137 miles ) per hour.
